Standard of the Labrador

It’s strongly built; it’s short, solid and tough. The Labrador is a dog not too big, which looks noble, attentive and his expression is straight, intelligent and very sweet.

Height at withers: 
Ideal: Males, 56 to 57 cm. - Females, 55 to 56 cm.

Head: 
Wide Nose, nostrils developed. Powerful jaws, of medium length. Teeth with scissors. Stop too pronounced.It has a broad skull, which is not in line with the nasal cavity.

Eyes: 
Medium size, brown or hazel.

Ears: 
Not large or heavy hanging against the dog's head and they are ussually at the rear.

Neck: 
Strong, well blended.

Forequarters: 
It has strong bones, straight from the shoulders to the ground. The shoulder blades are long and oblique.

Body: 
Wide and deep chest. Barrel-shaped ribs. Short and strong back. Broad and robust kidneys. Well-developed rump which is not sloping towards the tail. Hindquarters are well developed. Knees bent. Hocks slightly bent, not cattle-like.

Feet: 
Round, compact with toes arched and well-developed paws.

Tail::
Very thick at the base, tapering towards the tip, of medium length, free from feathering, but covered by the same hair as the fur in the body.

Fur: :
Short, flat, without waves, relatively hard. Waterproof under fur. Color black, brown or yellow, the latter in all shades from cream to red.

Labrador diet

Nutritional needs, calculated as maintenance ration for the adult specimen are between the 1450 and 1670 Kcal. a day. It is a particularly resistant dog that in order to pick up the prey, dives into the water at adverse weather and envioremental conditions. In these cases, the contribution in Kcal. daily should be commensurate with the work done.

Daily Care

The short-haired fur of the Labrador does not require special care.

Diseases

It has been described in the Labrador, as in other hunting breeds, the appearance in some specimens that during physical exertion, there can be an "instant collapse." Also In the black Labrador, it has been found evidence of a hereditary disease, type of myotonia, which involves slow and difficult movement of a limb or group of muscles in that limb. The animal shows symptoms of pain when subjected to physical exertion.
